The Honda Civic hatch that is designated for 2017 seems to wear the brand-new sporty design language of the tenth-gen nameplate more naturally compared to its coupe and sedan siblings, at least as far as the prototype model is concerned.
Whether it would fit as comfortably on the fifth-gen 2018 Honda CR-V is altogether another question. Would the vehicle’s heft clash with the stronger lines and bold rear lights styling?
Based on the test mule spy shots of the SUV, the more lively aesthetic elements seem to be in harmony with the rest of the vehicle, which is in desperate need of shedding its bland suburban ‘mom SUV’ image.
If the overall look of the all-new CR-V works out as well as it did for the Civic when the shroud is pulled from it next year, it could well overtake both the compact sedan and its mid-size sibling Honda Accord and become the best-selling nameplate in the Honda lineup.
That would be possible assuming that the sedan segment continues to decline and the SUV/crossover segment continues in its upward trajectory, which in turn depends on oil prices in the future. But let’s not go that far yet.
The CR-V surpassing the two sedans could also be enabled by the introduction of a plug-in hybrid variant on its fifth-gen model. This additional option would be good for another 10 percent boost in sales numbers, if the current Toyota RAV4 figures are anything to go by.
